Who is eligible to use DTS?

The Defense Travel System (DTS) is specifically designed to facilitate travel for a particular group of users. Eligible users of DTS include active duty military members, which encompasses those who are currently serving in the armed forces, as well as members of the reserve components, who may be called to active duty as needed. Additionally, Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees are also authorized to utilize DTS for their official travel needs.

This inclusivity is critical as it ensures that all potential users who may be required to travel for official duty have access to a streamlined and efficient system. The capabilities provided by DTS make it easier for these individuals to manage travel authorizations, arrange transportation, and handle related expenses, thus supporting the broader logistical needs of the Department of Defense.

In contrast, individuals working in the private sector do not have access to DTS, as it is limited to those within the military and federal government. Similarly, students enrolled in military academies, while connected to the military organization, typically do not have the same travel needs when compared to active personnel and DoD employees and thus are not included as eligible users of the system.
